Is it time to move on? How to tell when it’s time to seek new employment

It can be stressful to change jobs, especially if you really like what you do or enjoy being around your coworkers. Perhaps your commute is easy or the work is not difficult. Maybe there are perks that you wouldn’t likely get anywhere else – something as simple as free donuts each day or a company raffle. Sometimes, even when everything seems fine, it’s still time to move on and do something else; or at least do what you already do somewhere else.
You’ll know when that time comes, because you’ll have gone as far as you can go with the company you work for. No more raises will be available to you, there is no higher position or fancier title you can get, and you’ll start to stagnate. That means it’s time for growth, and new employment should be sought.
The same is true for companies where you find yourself in a hostile environment. It could be from sexual harassment or discrimination, or it could simply be that you work with people who are angry or negative or lazy. This can quickly become tiresome and wear you down, stealing the joy that you would otherwise get from work that you really love. If you find yourself in that position, it’s time to explore options for similar work in different companies.
Locating a place that you can grow both personally and professionally can be difficult and time-consuming, but when you find it, it will have been well worth the search.
